Acrel Demand Management: Optimize Power, Minimize Costs

What is Demand?

Demand typically refers to the average rate of electrical power consumption by a user over a specific period. It is generally measured in kilowatts (kW) or megawatts (MW), representing the average power usage level achieved by the user within a designated time interval (such as 15 minutes, 30 minutes, or 1 hour—this is known as the demand interval). It reflects the instantaneous degree of demand imposed by the user on the power system.

Maximum Demand refers to the maximum value of the average power during a specific billing period (usually one month) within a defined demand interval. This specific interval is typically 15 minutes, but depending on the regulations of different utilities and regions, it may also be 30 minutes or 1 hour.

Why we do the Demand Management

The logic of demand management is essentially to reduce power—by minimizing simultaneous use of large loads and distributing them across different time periods.

The pre-set load capacity of the power grid, including transformers and lines, determines the maximum achievable power. Exceeding this limit can cause circuit damage and transformer failure.
Electricity bills consist of two components: a demand charge based on transformer capacity or demand (reflecting fixed costs), and an energy charge based on actual consumption (reflecting variable costs).
The purpose of demand management is to reduce electricity costs!!!

Application Case:
In Malaysia, for example, local regulations require a 30-minute demand interval with a 1-minute sliding window. A unique requirement is the weekly time-of-use tariff structure, which differentiates between weekdays and weekends, with rates divided into peak and off-peak periods. Demand measurement is specifically required during peak periods.
The APM520+AWT+EIOT solution can currently display real-time demand curves, as well as data on maximum demand and its occurrence time.
